While many remember the battle of Gettysburg 150 years ago, a little known fact is the draft riots that occurred in NYC at the same time. Irish and other immigrants were recruited right from the ship to the war, while rich northerners bought their children out of the draft. The ensuing riots focused predominantly on African Americans, who were the only ethnic class considered lower than the Irish at that time. The riots came to an end when a group of Sisters of Charity Nuns, surrounded a black orphanage, refusing to let the rioting Irish immigrants pass.
